Saturday Throwback: Old Apartment

Welcome to Saturday Throwback!  Feel free to link up an old picture and story - just keep it clean!

This is the first home I remember.  It had a fresh coat of paint and had an updated screen door, but it was a humble little home.  This picture is of my Grandmother sitting on the front stoop.  She is pregnant with my mother.  You see, this apartment is built above a garage.  Grandma and Pap lived here while their home was being built - the home that would use the garage under this apartment.  I lived here for most of the first seven years of my life.  Those were very happy days.  Grandma and Pap were just a sidewalk away.  We were surrounded by fields and good friends.  I never thought we were lacking.  Yes, my brother's bedroom was a hallway with the laundry room and bathroom off of it.  Yes, there was hardly any insulation and the walls would be wet and cold.  Yes, the living room was so small that a loveseat looked like a full-sized couch.  Yes, the flat roof needed to be re-tarred regularly.

It was a humble home, but a happy home.  I hope to emulate that feeling in my home now as an adult.  What was your childhood home like?

(Since I have been pouring through old photos - a great fun activity - and connecting with family on Facebook, I had to link this post to Simple Pleasures even though it is from awhile ago.)

Visiting from #31dbbb!!

I really enjoy walks down memory lane. That is a great picture!

I just returned from a vacation to a place where my grandparents lived. I visited this place often as a child and it always brings back such great memories.

One of the only things I remember from my first childhood home is sitting on the living room floor in front of the tv watching Gilligan's Island. Weird memory, I know. :)

I love to see pictures of the sweet old homes where many if not most of us spent wonderful years. When I think back to the house where I lived as a small girl, I smile. It was humble. We had one bathroom and six people for a good many years. But happy??? Oh, were we happy!

I can relate to this post. I too came from a simple home. We were poor I suppose, but I didn't know it at the time because we were also happy. Thanks for sharing this today.
