Realization: I'm a Homemaker by Profession

Wow.  I was filling out a survey last night for Opinion Outpost (check out my surveys tab over on Penny Pinching Penguin to learn about this company that pays for surveys).  A simple truth hit me between the eyes.

I have a profession - Homemaker.  It is my JOB.

I must admit, I have been lazy about my job since leaving normal full-time employment.  If I were an employer who hired me, I would have fired myself long ago.

Yes, I know it is normal to go through phases.  I know it is normal to have off-days and off-weeks especially with a toddler.  I've had off-months back to back to back.

Maybe it is nesting kicking in, but I've been kicked in the tail to get myself moving and to do my job to the best of my ability.  The piles and piles of paperwork all over the house are gone.  I know they may creep back in from time to time, but my JOB is to keep them under control.

It is my JOB to take this house of ours and turn it into a welcoming and comfortable home.  An organized home.  A loving home.

This is a big job.  Raising little ones in the Way they should go.  Being a loving wife - a "help meet."  Being a housekeeper, a nurse, a comforter, a teacher, an inspiration, a hostess, an administrator, an organizer, a laundry service, a chef, and while being all those things, I am still a child of God and cannot let that most important piece slip.

Have you had a realization similar to this?  One that comes out of the blue and smacks you in the head?

Yes! I had this realization probably about a year ago. I have been striving to treat it more like a job...actually a career! For me, (and at this stage in the game) this means getting up early, getting showered and dressed (!) and having a plan of what I'm going to accomplish today. I have different levels of success and often my focus wanders, but I feel like I'm doing better at getting things accomplished and having something to show for myself at the end of the day! The career aspect of it has come to play in my life as I look at my long-term goals for myself, my marriage, and my family. We are working on a family mission statement, and things like that and other goals are helpful to keep me on track.
