Rediscovering Domesticity: What's Your "Shiny Sink?"

What's Your "Shiny Sink?"

FlyLady talks about her number one goal for each day to start and keep the home clean and organized - the shiny sink.  She encourages baby steps to organization.  The first step should be to end each day with an empty and shined sink.  She says that the shiny sink gives such a feeling of accomplishment and sets the tone for the next day.

My shiny sink - well, it is actually my sink and counter tops. No, I don't always have it empty and washed out.  Each night before I go to bed, I NEED to have a few things done for my sanity.  I need to have the coffeemaker set for Hubby.  I need to have Hubby's lunch in the fridge.  I need to have Baby's bottles and sippy cups cleaned and lined up for the next day.  I need to have the counter tops cleared off (mostly) and wiped down.

I usually take care of the coffee as I make lunch for Buggy and myself.  I make Hubby's lunch as I make dinner.  As I make and serve dinner,  I put  things away and generally get the kitchen cleaned up.  Yes, my kitchen table is usually a mess (this needs to change since Buggy is now tall enough to reach most things on the table!).  Yes, there are toys all over the floor intermingled with dog fur bunnies.  I'm only human!  Oh - um, no, the photo on this blog is NOT my kitchen!

What is your "shiny sink?"  What's that one thing that you just need to do so that your morning starts off well?  How do you do it?  When?

I love FlyLady, too! I really do agree that a shiny sink sets the tone for the day. When it's overflowing with dishes, I feel like I'm starting my day behind. I'm a much more calm and loving mom if we have picked up the living room before bed. If all the toys and books are up off of the floor, it gives me that same smiley feeling that my clean kitchen sink does :)

I'd like my shiny sink to be an empty dishwasher when I go to bed, so that I can be ready for the morning dishes. But lately I've just been filling and running it before I go to bed. Hmmm. I also like to have all the dishes clean at the end of the day. Not my stoneware for some reason, but everything else has to be clean. (this doesn't always happen though)
To help me accomplish these tasks, I listen to my iPod while I clean - songs, sermons, books, podcasts...whatever. It helps the time go quickly!

(I love the new look of the blog!)
